The center of Friedrichstadt was designed in the 18th and 19th centuries to become one of the most beautiful squares in Europe – the Gendarmenmarkt (Constable’s Square). To the west it features the Schauspielhaus (built in 1818-21 by Schinkel), functioning today as a concert hall. To the north and south it is famed by the Französische Dom and the Deutsche Dom (Frensh and German Cathedrals).
